Lower Primary Resources- FREE

I am currently on holidays and have just started to sort through resources I used to sell on eBay years ago. Times have changed so I am just going to gradually add some resources to my blog. Hopefully someone will find them useful.

  1. Number Charts- from one to twenty. Example shown below.

2. Word family flip booklets- cut, staple and read. More than 20 word families included in the document.

3. Adorable Birthday Posters- a different baby animal for each month of the year (A4 sized) plus a balloon for each month which is also A4 so that you have room to record the names of the children in your class, as well as the date of their birthday. I printed mine on a light blue paper, and it is very cute, if I do say so myself.

If you download these items I would like to get your feedback.

Living Things Science Assessment

I used this activity as an artwork initially but then worked one on one with children to see if they could remember the names of the plants parts as well as their functions. The kids were very disappointed that I kept these pieces for their Portfolios as they wanted to take them home so much. Sometimes they make me feel so guilty that I have to take down displays so they can take some of their favourites home sooner.

Cute Writing Ideas- Text Responses with Art

A few of my (and the kids) favourite writing lessons from Term 3. I LOVE presenting writing nicely with related artwork. It makes the kids so proud. If you have any great texts to explore in Kindergarten which lend themselves to nice artwork please let me know.

Mixing Colours- Art Lesson

I had not yet covered primary colours or how we can mix them to create secondary colours so designed a lesson where these concepts could be taught.
To begin with, we used the following interactive colour mixing activities:

Colour Mixing

The first part of the painting lesson involved using green to paint stalks ready to create a bunch of flowers. We then experimented to find which colours we could create. I also put out white paint. The kids each had their own paper plate to mix on (also allowing for an easy clean-up). It was quite a mess, but so much fun. Next, they painted the flowers of various colours to create their masterpieces.

All that was left to do was create a pot or vase. I cut out the shapes and the kids just put bright dots on them.

Once completed I thought they would look better without all the white visible around the flowers so we put a green wash over them.

The photos below kind of show how they turned out, please excuse the plastic protective cover.

Free Things

Farm Animals

Well, I am finding it a little hard to get into the habit of blogging, but I am going to make a determined effort this month.
This term our Science unit has been focusing on Farms, which appeals to me greatly because I grew up on a farm and I have two of my own delightful pet cows now. The kids have also loved this unit as animals naturally appeal to most children, and probably adults too.
I have not taken photos of my class displays, but I will add some stencils I have created and then add photos of our class displays soon.
No educational value, but I have added some photos of our beautiful Bessie and Alice.

4.Living Things Drawing and Listening Assessment. A clever colleague of mine came up with this cute listening assessment which clearly shows who is able to follow directions. It could also be used as a position activity, depending on the steps you give. If you would like a copy of the steps we used in our classes please ask.

Beginning to Blog

So Term three began with a staff development today and the day was filled with numerous presentations, one of which was on blogs and glogs. It inspired me to begin my own. Last term I decided to dedicate 90 minutes of a Friday's learning time to re-reading The Unhappy Golfish by Paul Dallimore. The kids love this story. It is very cute, but a lot of their enjoyment is derived from the fact that the goldfish says "poo". However, it has a great storyline allowing for some good discussion. As the text was so engaging, I then allowed the students time to write a simple response, ranging from 'I like the little fish', to texts retelling the story using ten sentences. After this, I did a directed drawing of the unhappy goldfish (cartoon style) and then the students cut out their drawing and glued it onto a piece of patterned paper. Finally, they glued on fish bowls which I had cut out for them (clear cellophane) and used a brown oil pastel to add some rocks to the bottom of the bowl.  The final product was very cute and definitely something the children could be proud of. I had release that afternoon so I cut out their writing and displayed their works in the corridor. When the kids came back before home time they were so happy to see their wonderful work and after the weekend I had several students tell me how much fun they had completing this activity. It was at this point that I decided I wanted to do something like this every Friday.
